So I started a new lifestyle this week. It's called the Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson. It's a combo of the paleo/caveman diet, the zone and calorie restriction. Basically it is a low carb HIGH protein diet (from grass fed beef, free range chicken (eggs too), no hormone enhanced anything animal, fowl and seafood) that allows for lots of berries, fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds and meat. No processed and refined sugars, all organic (which is really hard here in Mobile) One aspect of the lifestyle which is different than any other diet is the elimination of all grains and legumes.
Sisson's take on this is grains are toxic for the body in their raw form and are not easily digested by humans, period. Sisson explains that grains lead to excess inflammation in the body, bloating, allergies and a dangerous over production of insulin. The diet is very focused on insulin production and how this interferes with fat on your body. The eating habits of the primal blueprint allow your body to stop pulling energy from carbs and start burning fat instead.
It is also very interesting to continue my new interest in what the FDA is telling us what we should and should not eat.
I very excited and nervous about this lifestyle change. I have always been weak when it comes to food, but with this it seems very easy to eat this way. I am COMPLETELY addicted to carbs and sugar so I have had to battle a few mental withdrawal symptoms, but overall it was easy today. My goal is to lose 16 pounds (I know that sounds like a lot but that is what I have gained since January 2009). I don't feel deprived with this diet either which was always a problem for me with other diets. I can eat nuts, berries and seeds whenever I get hungry.
I also like the 80% rule Sisson has. He recommends following his plan for 80% of the time and you will reach your goals.
I am really bad at explaining things like this (as a counselor you would think this would be a strength of mine) so I urge you to check out Sisson's website if you are curious (or just want to waste time at school or work)

Wish me luck. I will explain more about this after I read more of the book.
