I recently started to do things for myself to improve my appearance. Hi, my name is Melissa and I am a fair skinned, freckle ridden, curly hair, greying, acne suffering, weight gaining, nail biter. God I feel better now.
Because of all these things, I thought there was really nothing I could do to better myself on the outside. Fair skin=no tanning only burns, freckle ridden=I will look 12 for the rest of my life, curly hair=VERY limited on hair style choices, greying=I can't even go there right now..pass the tissues....,acne suffering=again, pass the tissues, weight gaining=cycle of emotional eating leads to more weight, nail biter= I have to pay money to have pretty hands so why do it. All of these things I have always been very self conscience of. So I quit complaining and FINALLY did something about it. So I have started making improvements to my appearance.
1.The first thing was getting acrylic nails to help me stop biting them. This has worked and just recently I took them off and started getting manicures on my real nails. The only problem with this was they have really weakened my nails and I have to wait for them to grow out to be strong again. I must admit I started gnawing last night while watching a movie and slightly buzzing on some wine. I really didn't know I was doing it until I had pulled off the first one. I will do better next week.
2. I cut my curly locks and glossed my greys away. I basically went to my hair dresser for the glossing, told her I was thinking about cutting it short and then before I knew it, she had thrown me in the chair and my hair was lying on her counter (if this approach had not been taken, I would still be sitting here with my original length). I LOVE IT. I was a little nervous at first when she styled it because it was HUGE. However, once she assured me I could touch it because it was, in fact, my own hair, I smoothed it down and started playing with it a little bit. Now I have a cute and sassy short curly hair style.
The original goal of the day was to gloss away my greys. This worked, but I am not sure if it is worth the money. AND it totally irritated my scalp. I will have to talk with Elaine (hair dresser) about whether or not this is something I want to continue to do.
I see now why people love getting hair cuts. I had a new sense of confidence about me and felt great. David loved it and couldn't quit looking at me and smiling. We have a winner.
3. So, for the three people who follow me, you know that I have always struggled with acne. Ever since I was in high school I have had cystic acne. The toughest acne to treat and the most damaging to your skin (and self confidence in my opinion). I have gone through the anti biotics, I have tried every type of face wash and cream out there and I have paid hundreds of dollars in co pays to my dermatologist. I was put on birth control when I was 16 to correct my hormones which might be causing the break outs, but this never really helped my face. I am 27 and am still struggling with this.
My co worker Caroline suffers from this as well, and told me about a new doctor she is going to see. This doctor is a part of Med Spa and is able to charge things like chemical peels and microdermabrasian to your insurance because this is a surgical treatment for acne. She told me she was using a face wash, toner, moisturizer and sun block from Med Spa as well and her skin has really cleared up. So I made an appt.
Going into the place you thought you had stepped into a spa. Bright white clean walls surround the modern furniture and desk area. They call me back and take a scan of my face which tells me numbers about my pores, texture, wrinkles and other things I am not quite sure about what they mean. Basically all my numbers were where they were supposed to be except my UV spots (duh, I have freckles people).
So the doctor comes in, we chat, and she sets me up with my skin regimen. I use a salicylic acid wash and toner, followed by a moisturizer and sun block for the morning. She also writes me a Rx for Retin A to use with the other stuff I have been using. AND they set me up for a chemical peel. So, I am going to have to deal with flaking and a little more break outs for now and hopefully within a few months, my skin will start clearing up. In the mean time, I am going to have to invest in a wide brim hat because sun is not really a friend to me anyway.
I will try to keep yall updated on my skin progress. As of this morning, there is a lot of dry skin and flaking from the switch to salicylic acid. This gets better every day though.
My Next step...going to the gym. I will let yall know how they works out as well.
